Shade Loving Perennials
Oooooo my bit now!
In my opinion, there is nothing better during the heat of summer(?!) than to sit in the shade of a large tree surrounded by the lush green foliage of several large ferns and watch the last epimedium flowers ‘dance’ in the slightest of breezes. (Shame I don’t get to do it very often!)
I’m often asked which shade lover is my favourite and, after a pause, the answer is generally whichever one happens to be nearest at the time. In spring I fall in love with anemones, fern fronds as they slowly unfurl and of course the stunning beauty of the Epimedium flowers. In summer it’s the enormous ‘umbrellas’ of the Astilboides, the tiny flowers of the Helwingia and the striking foliage of Hostas that capture my heart. In autumn I always fall for the gorgeous scent of Actaeas and the stunning autumnal colours of Mukdenias.
Oh dear, I’ve just realised I’ve forgotten to mention Dodecatheons and Hakonechloas and Saxifrages and……………… and…………. see what I mean?!
